From The Pastor...

We are a caring family of God’s children growing in faith, spreading His word, and doing His work in the community and beyond.

I want to thank everyone for all your prayers, support and encouragement over the last several months. I started back part time in August and I am hoping to increase that soon to three-quarter time and eventually back to full time as your pastor again. I also want to thank you all for your patience and understanding as I make my way back to good health.

I have learned much on my journey! I have learned that not everything has to be perfect, that I do not have to be “super” pastor and that I have to started delegating more responsibilities to all of you.

Church is not an easy “business”. It was founded upon, and continues to function on the graciousness of volunteers. But as you know, one of the most valuable commodities of our 21st century is time. The practice of volunteering has been rapidly declining over the last decade and is currently at an all time low in our nation. Therefore, choosing our time wisely and prioritizing it has become a challenge. We at the church often feel we are no longer at the top of the priority list any more. I discovered that I have spent too many sleepless nights trying to solve this problem. I think, if we ‘just’ had better music, if we ‘just’ had a bigger youth program, if I were ‘just’ a better preacher, then Our Savior’s would move up one notch on your priority list and our doors would be bursting open with greater attendance, more varieties of activities and an abundance of financial support. What I have learned in my journey is that as hard as I try to make Our Savior’s the ‘perfect’ church, it is not up to me, but it is God’s church and it is just not “perfect’, nor will it ever be.

So, I have decided to do the best I can as your pastor. And also I will try to be the best husband and father to my family and attempt to still find time for myself. Hopefully I will be able to balance all these things and let the worries of the world not break my spirit again.

September is usually the month of new beginnings and I hope my story will encourage you in whatever battles you find yourself in these days. Remember to hang on to the promises of God because no matter how dark the valley may be, God is good and he will always extend his hands of grace to you and he will never, ever abandon you.

Keep the faith,
Pastor Jamie

We continue to accept funds for a handicapped accessible door on the front south entrance. The approximate cost is $4,000. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please make your check payable to OSLC Door Fund.

In the past we have been publishing our monthly council meeting minutes in the Salt Shaker BEFORE they are reviewed and approved by the Council. This means the council minutes will be published be a month later in the Salt Shaker.

25th Annual “Hutch’s Coats For Kids
Again this year, Valley News Live Chief Meteorologist Hutch Johnson is asking everyone to help children by donating good quality children’s coats, caps, snowsuits, mittens, scarves and boots to “Hutch’s Coats for Kids.” Local cleaners and service groups will then clean and distribute the donations to children in the community who need winter outerwear. In the past 22 years, “Coats for Kids” has collected, cleaned and distributed over 245,357 coats and accessories. Last year’s campaign provided children with 9,852 winter garments. “Coats for Kids” is a nationally recognized community service project, winning a 1994 Community Action Network award and the 1991 Second Century Initiative Award presented by the National United Way. The campaign is supported by MeritCare Children’s Hospital. Donations will be accepted through August 15th at Real Estate “7”, 702 5th Avenue SE, Devils Lake. For more information please contact Pam Petrik at 701-237-5211.

Fall Clean-Up
We are looking for any interested individual or group of individuals who might be interested in spear-heading the fall clean-up effort.

Loose Change
I have now raised $2052.09 for Partners For Womens Equality. This money will provide a scholarship for three girls in Kenya to attend high school. These expenses are $750 for a year with 3 terms per year at a boarding school. (It seems very cheap!). There are no administrative expenses or advertising expense. PWE is a small nonprofit group. My daughter, Maureen White Eagle, is the executive director of PWE. Every PENNY I collect goes towards the $750 scholarship. Please continue collecting your LOOSE CHANGE in a jar at your home and bring it to the church whenever it is convenient. We need to keep these girls in school.
Educating girls is so important. Some excellent reading along this line: Three Cups of Tea by Mortenson and Half the Sky by Kristof & WuDunn. Available at the Public Library. Thanks for your help and God bless ! Call 662-4606 for more information on PWE

Invite a Friend to Church

Come one, come all to our annual

“Invite A Friend to Worship”, Sunday September 19th & Wednesday September 22nd.

Worship has the power to transform lives and if you know of someone in your work, school or community that you want to share God with, then this is your chance! Here is how you do it:

1) Make a list of possible guests.

2) Schedule a time to visit them.

3) Tell them you have something very special you want to share.

4) Then simply invite them to come and sit next to you at worship. It is that simple! It just takes a little courage. If it helps you can also assure them that they will not be singled out or embarrassed in any way and that they will also receive a free gift for coming.

So, this year, make the effort to “Invite a friend to Worship” and be a part of Jesus’ Great Commission to invite all people to hear and experience God’s life transforming Word

LIFE WALK - FirstChoice Clinic’s 8th Annual !
Be a walker by putting FEET to your FAITH and putting LIFE first! For the past 8 years, faithful walkers have come out to raise funds and awareness so vulnerable mothers and fathers who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy are provided the support needed to make life affirming choices. You can help accomplish this by becoming one of FirstChoice Clinic’s walkers and collecting support from friends and family. The ‘Life Walk’ will be held Saturday, September 25, at Ruger Park, Devils Lake. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee, apple cider and donuts and the walk is from 9 - 10 AM. We encourage walkers to bring their whole family - your babies in strollers, children, teenagers and the grandparents, too! To register as a walker and to begin collecting pledges, email info@firstchoiceclinic.com , 1-888-237-6530 or go to teamfirstchoiceclinic.com . Walk brochures will be available in the church lobby.

Lutheran World Relief

Every year, countless Lutheran groups and individuals join their hearts and hands in sewing quilts and assembling layettes and health, school and sewing kits to be distributed to people in need by Lutheran World Relief. Making the quilts and kits is the first step in this ministry that has been the hallmark of Lutheran World Relief since 1945. Once finished, the quilts and kits travel down a long and sometimes-complex path to those who have the greatest need. Quilts and kits are delivered to LWR warehouses in a variety of ways--in person, by post, truck or even by rail.

They are processed, inventoried and packaged into cardboard cartons or plastic-wrapped bales to protect them in transit. LWR warehouse staff packs ocean freight containers and sends them to port. Containers are loaded onto an ocean freighter, which sails to the port nearest LWR’s receiving partner and they then distribute the items to those most in need. Each year LWR spends nearly $1.7 million to operate its quilt and kit ministry. Those funds, combined with the generosity of quilters and kit-makers throughout the U.S. enable LWR to distribute more than $12 million worth of quilts and kits annually.

Turkey BBQ and Corn Feed
The annual turkey BBQ and corn feed will be held on Rally Sunday, September 12th at noon. A free will offering will be received with all proceeds going to OSLC Sunday School. Those wishing to help with the event may place their name on the sign-up sheet on the announcement bulletin board.

Buy-A-Bird Program
Each year a number of individuals contribute funds to help defray the cost of the turkeys for the turkey BBQ and corn feed. Donations would be appreciated to help continue this program. The birds usually cost about $15.00 each. Thank you for your consideration. Again, the proceeds of this venture benefit the Sunday School program at our church.

Got any extra garden veggies?
Donations of tomatoes and cucumbers for the turkey BBQ would be very much appreciated. Thank-you. Please contact Don Brintnell or leave information at the church office.

Esther Circle
Esther Circle will resume on Thursday, September 9th at 2:00p.m. The hostesses will be Jane Jabs and Joyce Mikkelsen and Bette Hobbs will be the leader.

Mexico Mission trip Informational Meeting
Sunday September 19th, at 4:00 pm we will meet at the church to describe the trip, and give people an opportunity to ask questions and hopefully have some idea of how many of you would like to go this year. The tentative dates are Spring break of 2011 the second or third week of March.
